About Our Provider

Piedmont Physician Network welcomes Dr. Courtney D. Stephenson, D.O., FACOG, a preeminent Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist serving the community of Fort Mill, SC at her new practice, PMC Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Dr. Stephenson earned global recognition by becoming one of only a few physicians in the United States who provide the life-saving intrauterine fetoscopic laser surgery to treat Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), a condition that can be fatal to the fetuses in nearly all cases if left untreated. Dr. Stephenson was the first woman in the United States to open a de novo fetal care surgery center. Since then, she has treated hundreds of fetuses in utero and surgically treated close to 300 fetuses for TTTS with survival rates of over 92%. Dr. Stephenson and Dr. David Iannitti (hepatopancreticobiliary surgeon) performed the first-ever microwave ablation procedure during pregnancy to save fetuses losing blood to an acardiac mass, known as TRAP sequence.

Over the past decade, Dr. Stephenson has consistently been recognized as a "Top Doctor", both locally and nationally, with over 30 awards for excellence inpatient care, innovations in medicine, and she was noted as one of Mecklenburg's 50 Most Influential Women.

Dr. Stephenson will provide outpatient prenatal diagnosis and maternal-fetal care in Fort Mill, SC while also continuing her commitment and affiliation with the University of North Carolina's Fetal Care team at UNC Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill. Through this affiliation with UNC Medical Center, Dr. Stephenson will continue to provide lifesaving intrauterine surgery to fetuses in utero for the women in the southeast U.S. who need this expertise.
